Hermeneutic Phenomenology
Guided by a constructivist approach, this study will be conducted utilizing a qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological lens. From the standpoint of design, the application of phenomenology seeks to develop understanding and insights from lived experiences (Creswell & Poth, 2018).
Overview of Methodology
Exploring authenticity through the lived experiences of educators charged with fostering the conditions for optimal learning within the hierarchical structure of public education can offer many threads of examination. To that end, the phenomenological methodology is well- suited for this aim as the hermeneutic approach will utilize participant responses and perceptions to provide meaning that can unlock new understanding (Crowther et al., 2017). Moreover, with the research activities attributed to the hermeneutic method, a researcher can maintain their connection with the abiding concern of the research (Creswell & Poth, 2018). In doing so, a collaborative research approach becomes the hallmark for uncovering themes and generating the understanding critical to shifting paradigms.
Vision
The beauty of hermeneutic phenomenology is found in its direct link to the essence of learning (Guillen, 2019). As a philosophical construct, it demonstrates the interplay between the whole and the pieces that define a phenomenon. However, as a research methodology, it requires the suspension of judgment for the learner to gain insight from the thoughtful examination of the phenomenon through the lived experiences of others. Considering that learning does not occur in a vacuum and understanding is built through internal and external relationships with the broader world, the hermeneutic approach to phenomenology is a distinctive qualitative approach that can uniquely address the gap between theory and application (Elias, 2020).
